We’ve all been fans of the East Side King trailers and brick and mortar shop, but the latest addition to the family, Thai-Kun surprised everyone when Bon Áppetit named it one of the best new restaurants in the country.

Since 2012, some of the most popular food trucks in town have been gathering at the Long Center for Trailer Food Tuesdays.

A Taste of Brazil on the East Side

Fernando and Lauren Marri are the husband and wife duo behind Boteco, the Brazilian food truck taking the East Side by storm. Originally from Brazil, Fernando’s passion for bringing authentic dishes from his home country to Austin really shows through in both the food and the service.

Opened almost a year ago, Boteco has started to garner quite the following due, in part, to the lively and energetic atmosphere as well as the delicious food. After placing your order at the window, you can take a seat, relax, and listen to the spirited Samba music blasting from the truck. Fun fact about Boteco; you pay for your meal once you’re done eating as opposed to doing so once you order - the Brazilian way!

Having recently heard rave reviews, we were anxious to place an order and try out a couple of things. The menu is rather small which makes the decision making a bit easier. We ordered the Yuca Fries, Coxinha and the Picanha Grelhada.

The Coxinha (pronounced co-sheen-ya) was the first dish to arrive - hand delivered by the owner - and it was a great starter. Three large croquettes filled with chicken and cream cheese and deep-fried to perfection, served with a house-made chimichurri sauce and a side of hot sauce.

Yuca, a root that is native to South America, can take many forms but our favorite by far is when it is fried. The Yuca Fries at Boteco did not disappoint. Each fry carried just the right amount of salt and dipping it in the chimichurri sauce made it all the more tasty.

Our last dish was the Picanha Grelhada; a large bowl of rice, beans, grilled steak, onions, yuca and a fried egg. Every single bite was packed with so much flavor. The serving was huge and can definitely be shared if you order an appetizer as well.

The truck has gained notoriety due to their recent patrons, celeb couple Matthew McConaughey and his Brazilian wife, Camila Alves. Not only do the owners serve each dish to the table but they also chat with each customer to ensure they’re enjoying their food. Be sure to check it out soon to see what all of the hype is about!
