An Artistic and Elegant Dinner at Juniper

Juniper is new on the Austin dining scene; located in East Austin and opened by veteran Austin chef Nicholas Yanes. Yanes was most recently chef and creative director for Uchi restaurants and St. Philip. In preparation for opening Juniper, Yanes spent time in the Northern Italian regions of Piedmont, Lombardi and Emilia-Romagna.

The carefully crafted menu with dishes including Brisket Bolognese and Stuffed Pasta with San Saba pecans reinforces the southern flare on Italian food. Small plated concepts offer the ability to try multiple dishes and create a personalized tasting menu. Although the menu will change with the seasons, a vast array of items will be made or grown in house. House specialties include homemade ice creams, breads, freshly milled polenta and seasonal cheeses.

On our recent visit, we started out with 1 oyster each, made with fennel, amaro, and roasted orange- so delicious! Next we tried the Sunchoke dish, which is served with a super rich, delicious broth. The Gulf Shrimp dish was beautiful and bright, and we loved that the shrimp were served head-on. The Stuffed Pasta was one of the most unusual things we ordered, and its uniqueness wowed us. While we weren't crazy wild about our fish plate, it was cooked well. A larger serving would've won us over. The cannoli dessert was served with crushed candy and nuts for dipping; a perfect sweet ending.

The restaurant features an entirely open kitchen and bar, viewable from all seating areas, allowing diners to visually experience the energy of its culinary workings. For those who want to feel like they’re in the action, there are 12 ‘Chef Counter’ seats providing an up close and personal look.

Juniper recently launched a brunch and happy hour, and we can't wait to get back for that!
