Aroi Thai is tucked into a small food truck park off of Highway 290, admittedly not exactly the typical spot for seeking out authentic Asian fare. But if you think you can't find decent Thai food in the 'burbs, much less out of a truck, think again. Aroi Thai offers up delicious Thai cuisine in Dripping Springs.

Aroi offers a pretty extensive Thai menu for a food trailer

I've heard rumblings about this lesser known food trailer for a while now and finally decided to check it out for some takeout on a gray winter day. The trailer is open for lunch and dinner, but they close in between from 2pm-4:30pm. Takeout orders are popular, so if you want to have an early dinner I'd recommend calling as soon as they open (as crazy as that sounds). Because the food is made fresh, orders take at least 30 minutes - but it's worth the wait.

I like to stick to more traditional items on my first visit so I can really get a sense for the quality of the food. We opted for an order of their popular Chicken Thai Fried Rice - stir fried jasmine rice with egg, onions, and tomatoes. Light and flavorful, this dish works great as a main or a side. It's the perfect kind of takeout that will beckon you for leftovers (if you manage to leave any). We also selected their traditional take on Pad Thai, with chicken, bean sprouts, and egg. We tend to pick one noodle and one rice dish, though next time I look forward to trying one of their soups, like the coconut milk Tom Kha.

Since our main dishes were fairly standard, we decided to throw in an order of Shrimp in a Blanket. This appetizer is a playful take on an egg roll with "golden fried" shrimp inside, complete with sweet and sour sauce. For just $5 you get four deliciously crunchy pieces, and I can see why the dish is so popular among their patrons.

The trailer has a nice shaded setting with picnic tables and lights for nicer days and evenings, but Aroi also makes for great takeout.

The prices are reasonable, the food is made extremely fresh, and the staff is friendly - which are great reasons to visit this humble Thai truck when your Asian cravings hit.
