Domain’s Rock Rose district continues to offer trendy restaurants and bars to north Austin. Mia Italian Tapas & Bar brings its bite sized Italian dishes to the heart of the district.

On the menu, you’ll find an abundant selection of tapas. These dishes are on the smaller side, so you may need to order 3-4 dishes per person. We set out to try as many dishes as we could stomach.

Our first round of tapas from a bird's eye view.

Our order was made up of the Oven Roasted Meatballs, Shishito Peppers, Yummy Dates, Pork Belly, Patatas Brava, and Broccoli Rabe. It’s important to put together a mix of protein and veggies for a well rounded meal. The Yummy Dates were by far the favorite dish of the night. They were the perfect mix of sweet and savory. The Oven Roasted Meatballs, soaking in a tomato gravy bath and topped with parmesan cheese, was also a hit at our table.

Our favorite dish by far was the Yummy Dates.

If you’re looking for something more substantial, there are also larger dishes (to share, if you’re in the mood), pasta, and pizza on the menu. While we didn’t even get to these items, the Braised Lamb Shank and the Fig Pizza will definitely be on our table next time.

A meal of tapas must always include Patatas Brava.

While Rock Rose might feel a bit like a Disneyland neighborhood, Mia does its best to create an authentic vibe. With industrial decor and minimal lighting fixtures, it’ll take a minute before you realize you’re not in a converted urban warehouse. The restaurant has a narrow layout, with a long leather padded bench running across one wall and the bar anchoring the opposite side.

The industrial look of the bar gives the restaurant an authentic feel.

Like most newer restaurants in town, the sound level can be rather noisy. It’s probably not the best choice for a romantic date, but your group happy hour or dinner will fit right in.
