Opened in September 2010, Black Star Co-op Pub & Brewery is the world’s first cooperatively-owned and worker self-managed brewpub. Located in the North Loop area, it’s unique business structure, welcoming environment and ever-changing beer list is enough to keep the crowds coming!

Boasting a lunch menu primarily filled with sandwiches and burgers, Black Star Co-op is a great place to grab a beer and a bite in the North Loop. The space itself is very industrial looking and you can even sneak a peek at the brewing system in the back of the restaurant.

We started our lunch off with the fried jalapenos served with ranch dressing. The jalapenos were surprisingly large and had just the perfect amount of spice. I’d definitely recommend these as a starter.

We then moved onto the avocado club, which is a delicious sandwich filled with cheddar cheese, onion rings, tomato, lettuce, aioli and avocado served on Easy Tiger sourdough bread. You have a choice to add chicken or bacon to the sandwich and we opted for bacon. Great decision!

The Black Star burger seems to be the star of the menu. It comes served with bibb lettuce, tomato, red onion and beer mustard and you have the option to add cheese. The burger comes with a side of chips that are more like fries than anything. Very tasty but very messy to eat!

It was a little too early in the day for us to order one of their house made beers but we definitely plan on going back on a Sunday night for trivia and some brews.

The co-op has 27 workers on staff, 17 of who are members. In total, the co-op boasts over 3,200 member-owners. More information on how to become involved can be found on their website (linked below).
