Even though construction is still taking place at the new Lamar Union apartments surrounding Alamo Drafthouse, restaurants are continuing to pop up with rave reviews. Cantine is the newest concept from the owners of Asti and formerly Fino, combining their love of Italian food and Mediterranean flavors.

As a true hybrid of both cuisines, Cantine offers a nice selection of appetizers, pizzas, house-made pastas, and daily specials. Don’t miss their happy hour weekdays from 4-6 with $2 off drinks and discounted small plates. Since the menu has not been posted online at the time of this blog post, here’s a quick look:

On our visit we started off with the Housemade Pita and Dip, where you have a choice between muhumara, parsnip hummus, and baba ganoush. We opted for the muhumara, a creamy blend of roasted red pepper, tomato, and pomegranate, that did not disappoint. (When we ran out of pita the server offered extra, which I always find to be a nice touch - and we definitely didn't want this to go to waste!)

For our main courses, we tried the mussels and frites (actually from the starter menu, but a nice sized portion) and the spaghetti carbonara. We couldn’t resist trying one of the pastas made fresh daily with extra special thick noodles.

The restaurant décor is also worth mentioning. It boasts a clean, crisp design that goes well with this up and coming development on South Lamar. The restaurant also has a wrap-around patio, but shade can be tough to come by!

With all these options popping up, dinner and a movie has gotten a lot more exciting for South Austinites!
