Austin’s pizza scene continues to expand with the addition of Chicago import Gino’s East on dirty sixth. The long awaited eatery brings classic deep dish pizza to the heart of Texas. Planted in Austin’s most famous entertainment district and with plenty of space in the dining room, Gino’s East is a great option for group outings. Especially the kind that lead to a night out at the bars.

We started off with an order of the Brussels Sprouts & Pancetta.

The menu obviously focuses heavily on pizza. What else would you expect? Their signature is a selection of Chicago-style deep dish pizzas, but you can also go lighter with thin crust options. In fact, you can get their two most popular items the Meaty Legend and Chicago Fire in either style. Deep dish pizza is a messy affair but luckily your server can help out by slicing the pie and plating it for you. Remember that this is pretty hearty meal. A small pie can comfortably feed two. If you also order an appetizer, you’ll most likely be taking home leftovers.

Deep dish pizza is a delicious mess.

If for some reason pizza isn’t your thing, you can also find salads, sandwiches, and pasta on the menu. There’s also a selection of starters with pizzeria classics like mozzarella sticks and chicken wings but Gino’s also offers more unexpected dishes like deep dish nachos, BBQ brisket sliders, and brussels sprouts and pancetta.

A view of the main dining room from the upstairs section.

True to its midwest origins, the bar’s decor presents an eclectic mix of casual and classic touches. Red gingham cloths cover the tables, while the booths are upholstered with tufted leather seats. Large chandeliers hang from the ceiling and the walls are covered in a textured black wallpaper. The space is dressed up enough to stand out from its sister sports bar next door but casual enough so that you’re not embarrassed about how much you’ve had to drink or how much you’ll eat.

Dig in for a classic taste of Chicago at Gino's East!
