It only took about 5 years, but El Chilito on Manchaca and Redd is finally open for business and selling some of the best tacos in South Austin! The location features an original mural by Austin graffiti artist, Federico Archuleta. El Chilito Manchaca is El Chile Group's largest footprint to date. Even so, the interior may be a bit small, but there's an outdoor covered patio with many picnic tables and a killer breeze.

El Chilito exterior

You can't miss El Chilito when driving down Manchaca- the colorful building and sign couldn't be more cheerful, and the custom murals really make the location pop. The interior, not pictured in this blog post, is equally happy and bright. The setup includes a few tables and a counter where you can order your food and pay. The fast casual concept makes group meals a cinch- there's no need to split the bill when you can pay separately so easily!

The covered back patio makes great use of a small space. There's tons of seating, ceiling fans, and even a killer breeze blowing through, making outdoor meals pleasantly cool even in the heat of the summer. The patio is also pet-friendly. After we ordered inside, we easily scored a table since the lunch rush had come and gone. Our ceviche appetizer came out first, and we were surprised by the generous portion! The ceviche comes with housemade tostadas, and it's such a nice and light menu option. If you're looking for another healthy choice, we're happy to rave about the Black Bean Salad. The large size is $8, vegan, filling, and delicious! It comes with black beans, jicama, red pepper, cilantro, avocado, and lime on a bed of romaine, with a chimichurri vinaigrette or cilantro ranch dressing. It's something I know I'll be ordering often!

On the slightly less healthy side, we also loved the famous Puffy Tacos. You can order a Puffy Taco with either picadillo or shredded chicken, and both options are mouth watering. The Cochinita Pibil taco was also a crowd-pleaser. The Yucatan-style braised pork is complemented by tangy pickled onions. If breakfast is your preference, you'll be happy to hear that it's available all day at El Chilito! The Charlie's Special is one of their specialties, and it comes with farm eggs, chorizo, potato, tomato, onion, and serrano.

If you're interested in tacos but you're feeling extra hungry, you can optionally upgrade any taco to a burrito (taco ingredients plus rice and beans), or to a taco plate (a larger portion of taco ingredients with rice and beans and tortillas).

Outdoor covered patio (pet friendly!)

Delicious food!

El Chilito even has sweet treats! Choose between their selection of homemade Paletas (popsicles), horchata, or a variety of coffee drinks. They also serve a good little selection of draft beer, and frozen mimosas.

Take note though, during rush hours, parking can be tough.
