In a city where it's boat season basically year round, it's important to eat healthy to stay fit. Thankfully, True Food Kitchen has finally arrived.

Picnik, a paleo-friendly food trailer has been in business for two years and keeps getting better and better. What started out as a coffee trailer has evolved far beyond that and they now serve pre-made breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you’re feeling guilty about overindulging this past weekend, Leaf is a great lunch spot to make it up to your body.

Embracing Health at Picnik

There are three main things you should know about Picnik, one of Austin's healthiest dining destinations:

1. Picnik focuses on eliminating foods that can harm or disrupt the digestive system, without sacrificing the taste, texture, and deliciousness of their meals.

2. Picnik can accommodate almost all dietary restrictions, including gluten-free, wheat-free, keto, paleo, and more.

3. Picnik's butter coffee is the best in town!

Until recently, Picnik fanatics were only able to get their fix at the restaurant's repurposed shipping container trailer location on South Lamar, but just a few short months ago, Picnik opened a gorgeous, bright brick and mortar location on North Burnet. The South Lamar trailer (which we briefed you on here) is still in place, and it's a great spot for grab-and-go coffees, prepacked meals, and various snacks. The Burnet location has an extensive menu of coffees, food, and drinks, and we visited recently to bring you the full lowdown on their new spot! The best part is that the Burnet location also has all of your South Lamar favorites (ahem, butter coffee and pastries!).

You'll immediately notice upon walking in that Picnik's Burnet location is bright and cheerful, and decorated extremely beautifully. We wondered, "Is this a West Elm catalogue, or a restaurant?" It was just perfect. If you're looking for something quick, you can order at the counter or pick up some prepackaged snacks. Alternatively, let the host know you're looking to sit down and you'll be shown to a table.

Style perfection at Picnik

The night we visited was super busy, so we were shown to a very comfy seating area with stacks of amazing healthy cookbooks to browse. We ordered a few drinks to keep us company during our wait- the first being an iced Marshmallow Chai, made with grass-fed butter, MCT oil, rooibos tea, maple syrup, grass-fed collagen, grass-fed colostrum and grass-fed whey protein. This lovely dessert drink satisfied every craving! The second drink we tried was a super refreshing watermelon juice- perfect for a hot day when you're looking for a light drink.

Once we were shown to a table, we marveled at the menu- how can so many delicious meals adhere to so many nutritional and dietary guidelines? Picnik is magic. The Orange Chicken and Broccoli is the healthiest yet absolutely most delicious Chinese entree I've ever had. You won't miss the MSG-laden soggy mess you get from your usual takeout spot. Next, we shared the Icy's Chili, made with cumin and chile Mexican carrot rice, cilantro, avocado, crispy shoestring almond flour tortilla strips, pastured pork chorizo, raw cheddar, with optional add-on of a poached egg. This chili could easily compete with any other fatty chili- perfect for a cold day or football game meal. Not pictured here but worth the mention? The Eggplant Rollatini- we're still shocked at how convincing the cashew and cauliflower "ricotta" was. You definitely won't miss cheese!

If you're stopping in at Picnik for breakfast or brunch- fear not! There are still a ton of things on the menu for morning goers. Between the seasonal muffins, breakfast tacos, Breakfast Risotto, quiche, Harvest Hash, and Pancakes- you'll leave stuffed for nearly the entire day!

No matter which meal you stop in for, you should definitely try the Blondie Ice Cream Sandwich- it's heaven and easily split between two people (or more!).

Now that the temps will finally be dropping (Come on, Fall! We're all waiting for you!), we highly recommend checking out Picnik's back patio. It's super relaxing, shaded, and the tranquil sounds of the outdoor wall fountain make it feel like a secluded little paradise.

Picnik's new Burnet location has everything you love from the South Lamar trailer plus about 100x more. It's a great place to indulge in a great meal while still being health-conscious. Summer may be ending, but that doesn't mean you need to give up your bikini body!
