If you want to feel like you’re on vacation without leaving the city, then head to Perla’s Seafood and Oyster Bar. Located on buzzing South Congress Avenue, this casually upscale restaurant offers some of the best people watching in the city. In addition to a hip scene, the preppy restaurant offers fresh seafood, flown in daily, to enjoy all day long.  Saturday and Sunday mornings the eatery offers brunch and I couldn't wait to check it out.  

The brunch menu is robust, offering everything from homemade pop tarts to massive banana pancakes.  Like any good brunch should, it started with cocktails. Perla’s offers a daily frozen cocktail. We sampled the day’s special: The Painkiller. It’s a refreshing combination of light and dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, a splash of coconut and garnished with a cherry.

You can’t go to Perla’s and not order from the cold bar.  It was hard to choose with bites like the jumbo shrimp cocktail and gulf white fish & shrimp ceviche as options, but we opted to go with half a dozen oysters.  If you’re an oyster novice, the pastel clad wait staff is extremely knowledgeable and can provide guidance when selecting your oysters.  They arrived with the appropriate condiments: crackers, horseradish, mignonette, and cocktail sauce.

When picking entrees, I was drawn to the dishes featuring what Perla’s is known best for – seafood!  I opted for the Lobster & Egg White Frittata featuring asparagus tips, roasted tomatoes, avocado, and basil.  The sweetness of the avocado and lobster melded perfectly for a truly delicious breakfast.

We also tried the Steak Ranchero. A heartier dish, this was comprised of grilled hanger steak, two fried eggs, three pepper ranchero sauce and handcut fries.  Needless to say, we were stuffed.

Next weekend take a "vacation" and visit Perla's relaxing deck for brunch or dinner. The combination of high quality food and a laid back atmosphere will make it your new favorite foodie destination.
