I recently popped into Independence Fine Food for a quiet lunch and was thrilled to find such a great local option in South Austin. Whether you're in search of a quiet place to work or a cheerful place to meet friends, IFF seems to fit the bill with its wide array of healthy, fresh foods.

Patrons can choose from a unique variety of menu options for breakfast (until 11 a.m.), lunch or casual dinner, or you can feast your eyes upon the options on display in the deli case.

We started our meal with a cup of tomato basil soup (on special for the day) and a cup of French press coffee. I loved that you can order a small French press, but loved even more than the servings were bottomless for only $3!

For our meals we opted for one healthy from the Traditional menu and one hearty from the Specialty menu. We thoroughly enjoyed the Veggie Cowboy Melt, made with "cowboy" hummus, lettuce, tomato and provolone on whole wheat. For our more adventurous selection, we chose the Turkey Meatloaf panini - a popular choice among regulars. This massive sandwich is jam packed with turkey meatloaf, marinara and melted provolone on foccacia. Sandwiches average about $8 and come with a side of fruit, chips or pasta salad (we loved the pasta!), and we even took half home.

I was just saying recently that it feels like Austin could use more bakeries - and then I saw the baked goods case at IFF. I can't wait to return and try one of their many decadent treats.

It's always great to find a new neighborhood gem in South Austin, and I look forward to returning to try our their treats and some breakfast items like their Chocolate Bacon Biscuits!
