Grizzelda’s, a new restaurant blending central & coastal Mexican influences in whimsically sleek digs, is slated to open on November 30th in East Austin. Just a stone’s throw from sister restaurant Jacoby’s Restaurant & Mercantile, Grizzelda’s is a welcome addition to the burgeoning gourmand scene on Cesar Chavez St.

At a soft opening visit, we opted for some hand-crafted cocktails before getting to nibbling, opting for the CDMX and the St. Rueda. The former was smoke-forward and spicy, with mescal and all spice dram leading the way, while the latter was a much bouncier, nearly Tiki-esque tipple.

Jacoby’s is best known for its refined take on traditional Texas fare, and Texas fare is, of course, decidedly meat-centric. It’s fitting that far and away the winning bite we tried were the Deshabrada Tacos. Served on handmade, soft and thin corn tortillas, these tacos feature meltingly tender short rib tempered with a sharp caper salsa and cilantro leaves. Suffused with chile that provided more heat than spice and drizzled with bright crema, this taco was positively seductive.

On a similar note, while the standard guacamole was a pitch-perfect example in the traditional style, the Guacamole de la Casa was an exercise in complexity, featuring bold flavors such as smoked bacon, roasted garlic & pickled jalapeno.

For something lighter, Grizzelda’s offers several bright and refreshing crudo dishes, such as the Tostadas de Atun, whose genius secret weapon was savory bits of crispy shallot.

Grizzelda’s is located at 105 Tillery St. They open for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and from 5 to 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday. If you are a fan of Jacoby's like we are, you know you are in for a reliably pleasing experience at this new concept. We cannot wait for these doors to open.
