Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken Comes to Austin

With only five locations (the others in Tennessee and Arkansas), Austin should consider itself lucky to find some of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken right in the heart of downtown.   Despite the location near Flemings and Crave, you shouldn’t expect anything fancy – it’s more like visiting an old-fashioned southern diner with checkered tablecloths and rooster décor.

But you won’t want to mistake the restaurant for fast food.  They pride themselves on making their food from scratch, so be prepared to get comfy and wait a bit for your handmade plate of fried chicken to get delivered to your table.

You have the option of ordering individual pieces (snacks), plates that come with sides, or family style.  The chicken itself is cooked to perfection – crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside – with enough cayenne to notice the heat (and maybe even make you tear up a bit).

The chicken is undeniably the star of the meal, but don’t forget about the sides.  On our visit, we started out with fried pickle spears served with ranch, the perfect start to our southern fried lunch.

The family style platter was served with white bread, cole slaw and baked beans, all rich and satisfying.  We also tried a side order of macaroni and cheese, and it did not disappoint.
