We recently paid a visit to Gusto Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar on a Friday evening, and let me tell you – this place was packed! It happened to be a rainy night, so patrons weren’t able to take advantage of their killer patio, but the indoor portion of the restaurant offers a perfectly warm and inviting ambiance for a hearty meal.

Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait at the bar before our table was ready. Gusto is clearly a popular choice in the Rosedale neighborhood! If you get there early enough, they offer happy hour every day from 4-7pm, including $2 off all appetizers and pizzas, 25% off all bottles of wine, $1 off all draft beers, and $2 off specialty cocktails.

Our dinner started with the most deliciously warm focaccia bread and olive oil for dipping. We also couldn’t resist an order of the polenta fries, served in an adorable brown paper bag with roasted tomato sauce and parmesan. The fries were delicious and unique and the perfect portion size to whet your appetite.

For the main course, we were in the mood for fairly traditional pasta dishes, so we tried the Spaghetti Carbonara with pancetta, green peas, pecorino and farm egg, and the Papardelle Bolognese with beef and pork rague and parmigiano. Neither of us had trouble clearing our plates, even though we were pleasantly surprised at the portion sizes considering the affordable prices.

At this point we were basically stuffed, but we couldn’t resist trying one of the desserts. In keeping with our fairly traditional choices, we opted for the tiramisu, layered with coffee nougatine and cocoa – a light and airy end to a hearty meal.

We loved the ambiance at Gusto and are looking forward to returning in nicer weather to enjoy the patio! Don’t forget they also serve lunch and brunch on the weekends.
