Happening Brunch at Hillside Farmacy

Hillside Farmacy is a gem of a restaurant tucked away on 11th street in East Austin. The building was once home to Austin’s first African American-owned pharmacy and, although it has been renovated, it has stayed true to its origins and features a fun pharmaceutical theme throughout the establishment. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another time and place when entering the restaurant. Hillside Farmacy is the place to see and be seen on the East Side and. most recently, Austin’s newest celebrity transplant Zooey Deschanel was spotted dining with her husband.

Open for brunch, lunch and dinner seven days a week, Hillside Farmacy boasts a menu filled with fresh produce and locally sourced ingredients. We recently went for brunch on a Sunday and were faced with an hour wait time. The restaurant is directly across the street from grocery store (and more!) Quickie Pickie, so we stopped in there for a quick(ie) drink. Luckily, the hour wait time only turned out to be thirty minutes or so.

Once we were seated we ordered a carafe of mimosas, the Fried Egg Sandwich with bacon, the BLT Benny and the Blueberry Pancakes. Sticking with the pharmacy theme, the carafe of mimosas arrived in a beaker, which we thought was a very cute touch.

The Fried Egg Sandwich had avocado, aioli, sprouts, fried green tomato and crispy bacon and was easily the table favorite. The egg was just the right amount of runny and the fried green tomato really added an extra touch of flavor.

Our second entrée, the BLT Benny was served on two slices of thick French bread and stacked with tomatoes, bacon, spinach, a poached egg and then topped with a generous helping of hollandaise sauce. While the taste was spot on, it was a little difficult to eat due to the toughness of the bread crust.

We finished out our meal on a sweet note with the Blueberry Pancakes and brown butter. Perfectly fluffy and with just the right amount of blueberries, these pancakes really hit the spot. We’d definitely order these again.
