Hot Beverages to Brave the Cold

Winter has come to Austin, leaving many frightened and frigid. We like to think of this as the proper temperature to truly appreciate a warm cocktail. Let’s face it, a hot toddy just isn’t as appealing on a 60-degree winter day. If you’re up for braving the cold, here’s a list of some of our favorite places pouring glasses of warmth.

Located on the SoCo strip, Snack Bar serves up local and organic food in a space tailor made for lounging in. There’s also a fireplace, which gives you the perfect spot to curl up with a mug of their Hot Mulled Wine. And while you’re there, dip into some comfort food like their Goat Meatloaf, which includes carrot jus, yukon purée, and topped with a curried tomato glaze.

We know what you’re thinking, and yes Contigo’s seating is mostly outdoors. But the restaurant has added a tent with a firepit, and you can always wrap up in a blanket. It’s romantic. Plus, the restaurant has put together an entire Toddy Menu. Aside from the Classic Hot Toddy, you’ll find creative mixtures like the Contigo Coffee (rye whiskey, coffee, whipped cream, and 512 Pecan Porter reduction) and the Teacher’s Pet (Applejack brandy, apple cider, cinnamon).

Halcyon Coffee/Bar/Lounge

The downtown coffee shop is famous for its DIY s’mores platter, which would be a great cold weather snack. In that spirit, their coffee menu offers plenty of options for spiking your mug with your favorite spirit. You’ll also find a espresso cocktail section on their drink menu, including the Spiced Chocolate Mint (Bacardi select, creme de menthe, and whipped cream) and the Mochaluah (a mocha latte with Kahlua, grand marnier, and Irish cream)

Drink. Well.

During the holidays, the North Loop spot served up a special menu of hot drinks. Lucky for us, they’re still firing up the toddy pot for an off menu Hot Toddy made with Jamaican rum. Although, being in such cozy quarters may inspire you to order an ever warming whiskey drink such as the War & Peacemaker (a shot of the house “Fireball” blend and an Austin Beerwork’s Peacemaker Pale Ale).

Don’t let this rare weather pass you by! Get to sipping!
