Dive bars with live music are part of the old Austin charm that seem to diminish as our city grows. It’s rare for new places to eschew the upscale, but two new cocktail lounges on Cesar Chavez do just that. Stay Gold and Drinks Lounge both strike a balance for casual and cool spots to drink.

As the summer heat burns on, you may be yearning for a nice cool spot to grab a drink. Located in the middle of a midcentury era parking garage, Garage Cocktail Bar serves up delicious craft cocktails in a stylish setting.

Sometimes after a long workday, a beer or glass of wine just won't cut it; you need the hard stuff.

Inside Austin's Latest Speakeasy: Milonga Room

Hidden in the basement of Buenos Aires Cafe is a secret speakeasy called Milonga Room. Milonga refers to both a genre of music and a place where tango is danced. In keeping with the exclusive tone, the bar promises to hold surprise performances including music and dance.

The bar may be dimly lit, but it's a great place to gather with a small group of friends.

The intimate space was recently restored with decor from Buenos Aires thrift shops. Tufted seats and ornate furniture create a decaying glamor while decades old photographs, posters, and magazines help set the speakeasy’s era. Lights are kept extra low to keep things moody.

Milonga Room aims to bring Argentine drinks to Austin.

While the main dining room upstairs allows you a filling taste of Buenos Aires, Milonga Room focuses on cocktails and drinks offering only a few bites of Argentine cuisine. We recommend sipping on the bar's signature drink the Milonguero (made with rye whiskey, amaro meletti, and angostura). On the food menu you’ll find a variety of empanadas as well as olives and cheese boards. You could make a full meal out of them, but don’t count on it.

In true Austin form, Milonga Room offers a blend of glamor and grit.

Here’s how to make sure you can get into this exclusive spot. Shoot a text to 512-593-1920 or email milonga@buenosairescafe.com with your name, the date and time you’d like to visit, and the number of people in your party. When the restaurant confirms your reservation, you’ll get the night’s password for entry. Your reservation lasts 2 hours but if the night happens to be slow and you’re in the mood for more empanadas and cocktails, you might be able to stay a little longer.

If you’d like to grab a last minute spot, check out their Instagram (@milonga_room) for the night’s password and an update on open spots.
