Located in the heart of charming Clarksville, Zocalo is a perfect casual dining spot for a quick lunch or even brunch on the weekends. Counter service along with the vibrant and often cheerfully noisy interior also make it well suited for families with small children.

We popped in for a quick bite one weekend and had a hard time deciding between the brunch and lunch menus. Brunch is offered on the weekends from 10am till 2pm. Ultimately we decided on one of each! From the brunch menu we sampled the Huevos Verdes - two eggs and black beans on a crispy tostada shell topped with Salsa Verde and served with grilled potatoes. This dish was colorful, packed with flavor and, at just $8.29, a very reasonable brunch option.

We also sampled the Mexican Veggie Torta with grilled veggies, black beans, queso fresco, lettuce, tomato, avocado, sour cream and roasted jalapenos and service with rice. Though a bit messy, we somehow managed to clean the plate!

We made room for dessert because we couldn't resist an order of the churros. (I suppose I've become something of an aficionado, with previous posts on churros here and here.)  This generous portion of cinnamon sugar pastry comes out with sweet cream and warm chocolate dipping sauce. It was a pretty decadent finish to the meal, but it was by far the highlight. I loved having two sauces to choose from.

Zocalo is also known for their empanadas - you can choose from pork, chicken or veggie or even an apple version for dessert.

Don't forget about the drink menu when you're there - they offer a selection of imported beers, wines, and bubbly, along with sangria, their version of a wine margarita, and a Horchata Colada - rum wine, coconut, and pineapple juice.

Next time you're looking for a quick, casual bite in Central Austin, look no further than Zocalo.
