Love Thy Sandwich at Gourmands Neighborhood Pub

When a group of us decided to check out Gourmands for lunch last week, I was expecting a typical hipster joint on the east side. I was definitely mistaken. Gourmands is truly an authentic pub – old building, somewhat dark atmosphere, and a full house. We were there on a cold, rainy day so the pub atmosphere was perfect. But don’t worry Austinites, there is also a great patio out back where you can bring your dogs.

Despite the weather, the place was packed, and once we tasted the food we were not surprised. Like their slogan states, the restaurant specializes in a variety of sandwiches and offers great lunch combos with half a sandwich and soup or salad.

With their focus on sandwiches, it’s no surprise that their bread offerings are a standout. Even the soup that is part of the lunch combo is served in a delicious house-made bread bowl that left us feeling completely stuffed.

Some of the dishes we tried on our visit:

The Earl - Italian marinated chicken breast, Provolone, poblanos, black olives, sliced tomato, shredded lettuce, sprouts, pepperoncini relish

Soup of the day (corn poblano) and the Arnold Reuben - corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and Swiss on marble rye

Potato and bacon soup with Second Deadly Sin sandwich - Smoked turkey, bacon, Swiss, fried avocado, sprouts, green goddess mayo

We sat in the back room of the pub on our visit, surrounded by pool, ping pong, foosball and old fashioned video games. It definitely made us not want to go back to work but instead hang around to enjoy some of the games and local brews.

Plenty of entertainment at Gourmands Neighborhood Pub

If you consider yourself a true sandwich aficionado, consider joining Gourmand’s Sandwich Club. You’ll enjoy $2.50 drafts at the Sandwich Club Happy Hour on the last Tuesday of the month. The club is meant for anyone who thinks they can eat all 21 of Gourmands’ full sandwiches. Over 100 people signed up, but few have completed the task.
