When I first heard that the upscale contemporary restaurant Olivia on South Lamar was closing and being replaced by a Lucy's Fried Chicken, I was thrilled to have another casual restaurant nearby. When I finally got around to checking out Lucy's on the Fly, I was impressed with what Lucy's had done with the space! This particular Lucy's outpost is designed to make take-out fried chicken easier and more delicious than ever. With designated to-go parking and a great playspace for kids while you wait, scooping up a bucket of crispy goodness for the family couldn't be more appealing.

While fried chicken always sounds mouthwatering, the idea of a greasy, cheap drive through is not. Go local and embrace the goodness of real food with Lucy's on the Go. The menu goes far beyond fast food, though almost just as indulgent. The appetizer options include unusual dishes like Deep Fried Deviled Eggs and Fried Green Tomatoes. But what we're really here for is the crispy brown fried-to-perfection chicken. Score a Bucket o' Bird, which feeds four people and includes pickles and jalapenos. Or stick with a basket, a la cart chicken, tenders (including a gluten-free option), a grilled or fried chicken sandwich, and even fried chicken salad. If you're sweet tooth is calling the shots, go for the Chicken and Waffle. Beef eaters have a burger option, as well. The kids menu even goes beyond chicken with a foot long corn dog option. Don't worry, you can order that as an adult- we won't judge.

Lucy's doesn't just shine when it comes to chicken. Their sides are just as delicious and important! With these options, even a vegetarian can have a great meal here. The Mashed Potatoes, Smoked Potato Salad, and Mexican Coke Sweet Potatoes are all great options spud-wise. Get your greens on with the Collard Greens or Creole Okra. Other classic options include Mac n Cheese, Corn on the Cob, Slaw, Texas Caviar, Black Eyed Peas, and even Grits. Y'all, this is as Southern as it gets!

It's not just fried chicken, y'all!

Seeing as how this new location was touting itself as a great to-go spot, that's what I decided to try. The order-at-the-counter model makes it super simple to place your order right away. My order for four was a Bucket o Bird, Collard Greens, and Smoked Potato Salad. It was ready to go in just about 10 minutes and packed up nice and securely for my quick drive home. Unpacking it was super easy and it was ready to hit our plates in just about a minute! We devoured the whole bucket and sides, but I will say the portions were generous! This is definitely enough to feed 4 people, possibly even 5. The food tasted fresh and filling, just the way fried chicken and Southern food should be.

An unpacked to-go order - mouthwatering!

Generous portions means there's enough for everyone

You can't top the convenience, family-friendly atmosphere, and generally easygoing atmosphere of this Lucy's location. The folks are friendly, the food is delicious, and it's an awesome place to hang with a group. The dedicated parking lot is just icing on the cake!
