Mardi Gras Specials Around Town

Get into the Mardi Gras mood this weekend by treating yourself to some tasty King Cake, Cajun cuisine, or Big Easy inspired cocktails at one of these spots around town.

Let's do things right and talk about desserts first. Traditionalists can special order the French Galette du Roi with almond paste filling from Sweetish Hill Bakery. The shop is known for preparing their goods in the classic French method and will also have the classic King Cake available every day until Mardi Gras.

Easy Tiger puts a playful spin on the traditional King Cake recipe by baking their treat with pain au lait dough filled with a mix of cinnamon sugar and butter and drizzled with colored sugar and icing. In place of a plastic baby, you may be lucky enough to find a tiger in your serving.

Also playing on tradition, a special golden baby is waiting for someone in a King Cake at Epicerie Cafe & Grocery. Whoever finds the golden baby wins a $50 gift card. Aside from the desserts, you can also hit up this spot to slurp up some venison and gator gumbo.

Those looking for more savory ways to celebrate can swing by Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden for some of their delicious Cajun food specials. Every day until Tuesday they'll be offering beignets and shrimp sausage po'boys. In addition, they'll be running rotating specials of boudins including alligator and crawfish as well as sausage and shrimp-stuffed mirliton squash.

Once you've recovered from a weekend of indulgence, celebrate Fat Tuesday by heading to Péché and sipping on the Vert Mardi Gras, the mixology bar's $5 absinthe special. If dreams of green fairies are too much for a week night, the Hightower will be serving up their own version of the classic New Orleans Hurricane cocktail.

Whatever your preference, there are plenty of ways to  eat and drink like you're in the Big Easy right here in Austin.
