There are countless Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants within the Austin City Limits, and almost everyone has their go-to.  This week we visited a personal favorite, Polvos Mexican Restaurant. Known for their salsa bar, generous pitchers of margaritas, and authentic Mexican food it is no surprise there is typically a wait to dine.

The South First location boasts a casual atmosphere with Mexican flair. The biggest draw though, is the large outdoor patio that is packed with patrons on nice days. We popped in for a celebratory lunch and were not disappointed.

To start, the table ordered a pitcher of frozen house margaritas and an order of the chili con queso. Margaritas are available in an array of flavors such as peach, cantaloupe, and coconut.  But note, the pitchers are only available in the house lime flavor. The queso is served with cilantro, chopped peppers, and ground beef on the side so you can pick and choose what you want to mix in.

Polvo’s menu offers an abundance of traditional dishes from enchiladas to tortas.  But if you’re a fan of garlic, then we highly recommend the Pescado al Mojo de Ojo. The dish features grilled snapper intensely sauteed in garlic and real butter and is served with a house salad and rice. It is a lighter option, but will leave you reaching for breath mints after.

Another seafood dish we ordered was the ceviche. This fresh and simple dish features white fish, diced tomatoes, peppers, onions, and cilantro all marinated in lime juice. If you are looking for something with a little more substance, then try the Goliath Burrito. The burrito lives up to it’s name as it is extremely large.  It is stuffed with your choice of chicken, picadillo, vegetables, beans, and rice, and is topped with Monterey Jack cheese.

If you’re looking for a place to gather a large group and celebrate, then head to Polvo’s on South First.  The surplus of cold drinks and warm queso will please everyone in your party.
