Don't let the strip mall location fool you. Guantanamera is a friendly and festive neighborhood joint in the heart of South Austin serving up delicious Cuban food.

We visited the restaurant on a Friday evening and like most neighborhood hot spots, it was packed before 7pm. Plus, frequent diners know to show up before 7 to take advantage of great happy hour specials on cocktails and appetizers. We enjoyed a refreshing mojito and Cuba Libre while we perused the menu options.

The staff was extremely friendly and informative. Our waiter shared several tips for navigating the menu along with some of his favorite dishes. He also let us know the many of the appetizers would also be included as side dishes with our entrees. With that in mind, we started our meal with a tasty and hearty beef empanada for only $2.50.

For dinner, we selected the Carne con Papa, cubes of tender beef slow cooked in a tomato sauce with onions, peppers and potatoes. I also couldn't resist one of the house favorites, the Masas Fritas, lightly fried tender chunks of marinated pork. The portions are extremely generous and include rice (yellow or white), beans (black or red) and a choice of sides like maduros, tostones and yuca. We loved all the options and tried our best to get a bit of everything!

I fully intend to return to Guantanamera for another fun happy hour and for lunch so I can get my hands on their El Cubano, a classic Cuban sandwich of roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread.  They also offer a brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays featuring Cuban classics and don't forget that signature coffee. So glad to have discovered this South Austin gem!
