Porter Ale House & Gastropub opened this month under the Tree condominiums on South 1st.   With a vast beer selection, inventive cocktails, and a unique twist on pub staples, the restaurant is a great neighborhood spot for some drinks and high-quality grub.

The owners have experience working together at Hyatt Lost Pines and share a love of good beer, approachable food, and Johnny Cash.  (The name of the restaurant was inspired by Cash’s “Hey Porter.”)  Though the restaurant can accommodate 100 guests, the narrow space and low lighting has an intimate feel perfect for a neighborhood pub.

Porter offers about 30 beers on tap, with a wide selection of local brews and unique imports.  The drink menu includes everything from their twist on a Moscow mule to a Banana Nut Old Fashioned.

The menu is divided into snacks, small plates, and large plates, with most items easily shareable.  Some of our picks were a bit pricey for the portion size, but the flavors made up for it.

The real standout of the meal were the Curry Fried Chicken Thighs served on sweet potato waffles with delicious maple vinaigrette and cinammon butter.  Some other highlights from our meal –

Truffle & parmesan popcorn with a French ‘04

Oxtail croquettes

Pork belly sliders with “branded” buns

Mussels with 512 IPA, fresh tarragon, house mustard, cream and pretzel croutons

Donut holes with caramel dipping sauce

Rumors are milling that Porter will soon be offering a “badass brunch” – stay tuned!
