Rooftop Ritas at El Alma

When someone asks me my favorite Mexican restaurant in Austin, I have a really hard time answering.  With options like classic Tex-Mex at Polvos, interior cuisine at Takoba, and upscale dining at Fonda San Miguel, it’s difficult to choose.  But over the years, I find myself continuing to go a bit rogue, listing El Alma as one of my favorites in town.

Located just south of downtown on Barton Springs, El Alma offers tasty and authentic Mexican dishes in a cozy environment.   The restaurant is built into a limestone hillside, with exposed rock at the back of the dining room and stairs adorned with tropical plants leading up to one of the best rooftop patios in town.

But I promise there is so much more than just the ambiance.  Here are some of my favorite dishes:

Empanadas corn masa filled with mushrooms and cheese, served with salsa picosa and guacamole (photo via El Alma Facebook page)

Duck Enmoladas - shredded roasted duck with pasilla mole and almonds, served with corn slaw and white rice

Taco plate with Pastor (Adobo pork with grilled pineapple) and Carne Asada (grilled steak, caramelized onions, and guacamole)

El Alma offers happy hour daily from 3-6pm with discounted appetizers and drink specials and brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays.  Plus, they’ve even started offering picnic packs in reusable coolers for Blues on the Green, including guacamole al chipotle, nopalito salad, ensalada callejera, and chips and salsa.  Next time you’re just south of downtown, give El Alma a try.
