North Austin has long been in need of trendy neighborhood bars. Luckily, Royal Jelly has set up shop just off North Lamar in the Highland neighborhood to pour friendly drinks and serve up shareable American tapas.

Eastcider's Ginger Lemonade debuts just in time for warmer weather.

Along with a great selection of Texas beer and wine, Royal Jelly offers a few special cocktails. We boozed on all three: the sparkling wine based Cherry Fizz, Eastcider’s Ginger Lemonade, and the Sangria Especial.

The menu features tapas-style American dishes that are perfectly shareable for a night out with your friends. If you’re planning on making a full meal, the bartenders recommend at least two plates per person. During our visit we tried a selection of five dishes. We started off with an order of the Avocado Hummus, which is an interesting take on your standard chips and guac. We moved on to the Grilled Purple Carrots (featuring smoked harissa, curried yogurt, and carrot top-walnut pesto) and Beef Short Ribs (featuring crispy rice cake, charred choy, pickled mushroom, and black bean-garlic sauce).

The BBQ Pork Buns were our favorite dish of the night.

Our favorite dish of the evening was the BBQ Pork Buns, served as a build your own dish with spicy pickles, scallions, and spicy sriracha mayo.

Be sure to get a slice of the decadent Chocolate Pecan Pie.

We wrapped up our meal with the decadent Chocolate Pecan Pie. Whatever you do on your night out, don’t skip out on that pie.

The bar is pretty cozy so it might not be the best idea for a large group outing, but it’s perfect for a casual night out with your closest.

Victorian meets sci-fi decor keeps Austin weird.

Living up to its namesake, Royal Jelly definitely adds some royal touches with its decor, offering Victorian loveseats to lounge in. But the mood is balanced out with a heavy metal inspired mural, mid-century bar stools, and a casual street-side patio.

Stop into this neighborhood dive for your next happy hour!
