Savory and Sweet Treats at Nightcap

Nightcap, a newly opened small plate restaurant on West 6th will make all of your sweet tooth dreams come true. Nightcap features a mostly traditional cocktail menu with some not-so-traditional names, and a separate menu for both savory and sweet plates.

Located next to Winflo Osteria in a beautifully renovated bungalow, Nightcap’s ambiance makes for the perfect date night. Whether you’re starting your night there with a drink and some savory small plates or ending it with a boozy milkshake and dessert, Nightcap is sure to be a great experience either way. We’ve been anticipating the restaurant opening for the past couple of months and couldn’t wait to check it out. We ate dinner beforehand and decided to go just for desserts and cocktails.

The cocktail list is rather long and each one comes up with an inventive name like "Bitter Crush - Look But Don’t Touch" and "XOXO Martini - Keeping You Up All Night". We ordered the "Red Headed Step Child - Don’t Beat Her…She’ll Beat You Back", which is Nightcap’s take on a New York Sour. It’s a strong mix of Bulliet rye, lemon and orange juices, sugar cube and is then topped with wine. If you’re a bourbon fan, this is the drink for you.

We then settled on three desserts to order. The menu options all look so tempting that it was hard to decide what to get. We opted for the Cookie Du Jour, the Olive Oil Cake and the Elvis Brownie. We also wanted to get the Salt/Pepper, which is a chocolate pave, with brown butter ice cream and honeycomb but decided it might be excessive to order four desserts for a table of two.

The Cookie Du Jour changes daily as the name suggests and is baked fresh to order (allow 15 minutes for the baking). On the night we went it was an oatmeal cookie with a marshmallow fluff inside. It comes served with a little glass of almond milk horchata on the side.

Next up was the Olive Oil Cake, a sweet meets savory treat. The cake is served with charred apricot, buttermilk gelato and is then coated with basil milk. This is the kind of dish that you need to take a little piece of everything and mix it together in one bite. An interesting flavor combination but we all really enjoyed it.

Our favorite of the night was the Elvis Brownie. This giant, indulgent banana almond brownie is served with a coconut sorbet and candied pecans. The banana and chocolate mixture of the brownie is to die for.

Nightcap is referring to itself as the “oasis of indulgence” and it would be hard to disagree with that. This sweet little spot has been three years in the making and you can really see the love and hard work that was put into it. Nightcap is open Tuesday-Saturday from 5pm – 12am and it’s just been announced that a Sunday Brunch will be coming soon.
