As far as I’m concerned, Alcomar is the best thing to happen to Sunday brunch in Austin in a long time. And the good news is their brunch/lunch menu is offered daily from 11-3pm.

Located just south of downtown on Barton Springs, El Alma offers tasty and authentic Mexican dishes and one of the best rooftop patios in town.

This Sunday try veering a little from the usual and brunch up at El Naranjo on Rainey Street for some Mexican dishes straight from Oaxaca.

Scrumptious Brunch at El Alma

El Alma has long been one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town, and I was excited to finally try their brunch menu. They offer brunch on both Saturday and Sunday (which I love) from 10-3, and even on holidays.

It was actually hard to narrow down the choices among the unique brunch menu. As if Chef Alma's delicious take on Mexican food isn't already difficult to resist, throw in some runny farm eggs and you'll be in heaven.

Our group sampled a variety of dishes including the Omelette Ahogado - spinach, mushroom, jack cheese, smoky tomatillo salsa, pico, queso fresco, and spicy "papitas" on the side. This was an extremely hearty dish, especially for a vegetarian option, and the potatoes went quickly!

Omelette Ahgadoo was a great vegetarian option

I selected the Gorditas Rancheras, and it was the favorite dish of the table. Farm fried eggs on refried bean gorditas, chipotle tomato salsa, crema, queso fresco, and avocado. This was easily the best ranchero sauce I've ever had, and I loved that the portion didn't leave me feeling uncomfortably stuffed - it was just right for brunch.

Gorditas Rancheras was perfection in both flavor and portion size

Lastly, we were able to try the Torta de Huevo - an open faced sandwich with chorizo scrambled eggs, jack cheese, refritos, crema, avocado, pickled jalapenos, and more of those spicy papitas. I loved the concept of this dish, but brace yourself - it's pretty heavy on the bread.

And don't worry - if you're not feeling super adventurous, there are standard breakfast taco options to choose from, and of course the rest of the full menu. You can also order off the a la carte menu. Next time I'll be trying the banana bread pudding!

One of the reasons I love El Alma so much is because of the atmosphere. They have a unique rooftop patio, complete with blankets when it's chilly. The interior is vibrant and loud, which in my case is perfect for bringing along an energetic baby! Plus, I love the natural stone wall leading up to the rooftop. It's a small space that packs a lot of punch.

As always, El Alma left me feeling full, satisfied and ready to come back to try more. Next time you're looking for a new brunch spot, don't forget to check the menus of some of your old favorites. And be sure to follow El Alma on Instagram for specials and mouth-watering pics!
