With two locations, the original off of South First, and the newest shop on the East Side, Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop is churning out some of the most delectable sweet treats in Austin. The black and white checkered floors and the 50s style décor will make you feel like you entered into another time as opposed to just stepping off of busy South First street.

There are over 30 types of cupcakes to choose from at Sugar Mama’s including the Mud Pie, the Strawberry Love and the Brown Ale. The options vary by day, so luckily you won’t be too overwhelmed with the offerings. Although I must admit, I had a hard time narrowing it down. After asking a member of the staff for some recommendations, I ended up with the Hemingway, the Alpocalypse and the Great Pumpkin, which is a seasonal special.

The Hemingway is a vanilla cupcake filled with homemade key lime curd and topped with key lime vanilla cream cheese frosting. It’s the perfect mix of tart and sweet.

The Great Pumpkin is the perfect seasonal cupcake for the fall. It’s a pumpkin cake with chocolate chips that’s topped with a spiced cream cheese frosting.

Sugar Mama’s was featured on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars a few years ago. The Alpocalypse cupcake was the show’s frontrunner, and for good reason. It’s a chocolate cake filled with a spicy chipotle truffle and rich chocolate buttercream on top.

The “icing on the cake” to my trip to Sugar Mama’s was the Salted Caramel Snickerdoodle cookie. As a self-proclaimed cookie aficionado, this might be my new favorite in town. It was almost as big as my head, filled with salty caramel and dusted with fleur de sel.

In addition to cookies and cupcakes, the bakeshop also makes pies and custom cakes. You can also find plenty of gluten free and vegan options on the menu. Be sure to make your way to a Sugar Mama’s location soon to get your sweet tooth fix.
