Trailer Food Tuesdays

Since 2012, some of the most popular food trucks in town have been gathering at the Long Center for Trailer Food Tuesdays.  We all know that tracking down some of these mobile food trailers can be a challenge, so it’s great to know that on the last Tuesday of the month from April – October, you can find a great selection in one place, along with a pretty sweet view of downtown.

Great downtown views while you sample trailer food

I recommend scoping out the Trailer Food Tuesdays website ahead of time so you know which trailers are participating and can make a game plan.  Last night I had one focus and that was The Peached Tortilla.  This trailer has been on my list for a long time, especially with the announcement that they’ll soon be opening a brick and mortar restaurant.  Now that I’ve sampled some of their specialties, I can’t wait to go back.

The bahn mi taco is one of the most popular items they offer, but my favorites were the brisket slider and kimchi balls.

Here’s a tip - Austin is a test market for the PayPal app.  If you download the app, you can find discounts to a bunch of restaurants and trailers around town, including $5 off at the Peached Tortilla!

The Peached Tortilla had some of the longest lines, followed closely by DFG Noodles.  Sticking with our Asian-food kick, we decided to try out the Forbidden – slow braised beef tips in an Indonesian curry sauce, served over Thai jasmine rice and topped with fried shallots.  Though it was a bit rich, I’m looking forward to trying some of their other dishes like the Scholar (stir fried vermicelli noodles, spiced ham, pork belly and Chinese greens, topped with fried shallots and chili sauce) and the Golden Nuggets (chicken marinated in teriyaki ginger soy sauce and fried, served over ginger rice).

Even after all that yumminess, we managed to save a tiny bit of room for dessert and headed straight over to CoolHaus for a gourmet ice cream sandwich.  Choose from a variety of fresh baked cookies and uniquely flavored ice creams, served with an edible wrapper!  It’s pretty messy and hard to eat, but it’s a great way to cap off a summer night.

Some of the other participating food trailers that we didn’t get to try were Regal Ravioli, Dock & Roll, Wholly Kabob, and Mellizoz Tacos.  Though the lineup changes each month, we’ll keep our eyes on these for next time.

With over 1,000 food trailers in Austin, Trailer Food Tuesday is a great way to try out a few all in one place.  The next one will be held on July 29 from 5-9pm.
