The now Instagram famous neon sign

Irene’s is the latest from the team behind Easy Tiger and 24 Diner. Chad Gluckson, one of the team members, named the restaurant after his grandmother, a “drinking, smoking, gambling woman with an immense heart and a keen understanding of true hospitality.”

A view of the outdoor bar.

We started our visit with a Waterloo Sunset (Irene’s version of a margarita made with tequila, an orange liqueur, and lime) and a Sweet Jane (a smoky concoction of mezcal, Mexican Coke, and cherry).

The food menu features a great selection of shareable snacks, sandwiches, and daily blue plate specials. For a large group gathering, you might consider ordering the Picnic, which includes jalapeño “summer” sausage, deviled ham, bread & butter pickles, Brooklyn lager mustard, cream cheese with chow chow, and saltines. Also, be sure to add on some Pigs in a Blanket.

There’s a section of sweet and savory toasts if you’re looking for a light bite. You can never go wrong with an order of Avocado Toast.

All of the hearty sandwiches are served on delicious Easy Tiger bread. We dined on the spicy Buffalo Pulled Pork and the Pulled Chicken and Avocado sandwiches. Both were filling and joyously messy. To complement our sandwiches, we added side orders of the Smoky Cucumber Slaw and Marble Potato Salad.

If you live or work in the area, you’ll be happy to know that Irene’s opens at 7am with a window counter that offers a full coffee bar, their sweet and savory toasts, and a special Morning Bun.

Grab plenty of snacks for your group.

The best thing about Irene’s is the space. There’s tons of outdoor seating that wraps around the building. Pecan trees shade the rear patio, which overlooks Shoal Creek. You can cozy up with your crew for cocktails. The design is eclectic and trendy with plenty of hexagonal tile, wooden paneling, and colorful accents.
