You Can't Go Wrong at VIVO
VIVO has been offering modern Tex-Mex to Austinites for over ten years now. Originally located off of Manor Road, they have since moved to The Linc in north Austin. The relatively new location offers a broader menu including brunch and an enormous selection of quality tequila.
If you were a fan of the former VIVO location, you will not be disappointed. The VIVO team has gone above-and-beyond to maintain the same funky character as the original. The deep red walls feature dramatic artwork and flickering candles line the tables. Although, there is no outdoor dining at the new location.
Like most dinners out, we started the night with some cocktails. VIVO is known for their elegantly dressed, and equally delicious, margaritas. The rims of the margs are adorned with orchids and fresh lime. They are definitely Instagram worthy. Don’t miss out on happy hour, Monday- Friday 4:00-7:00, where they are only $5.00. If you aren’t in the mood for margaritas, they also offer an array of beer and an extensive list of tequilas.

Chips and salsa are served with every meal and stand-out to me. The chips are perfectly crisp and lightly salted, and the salsa has a nice pop of heat without burning your mouth. For our main course we went with their signature puffy tacos. The homemade corn tortillas are fried until puffy and are served with your choice of filling: beef picadillo, shredded chicken, tofu, or bean and cabbage. The tacos are served with whole grain brown rice and beans. I recommend ordering the Emma Plate which comes with one puffy taco and one enchilada. This will allow you to sample two of their signature dishes.

Another noteworthy menu item is the steak jalisco which is grilled skirt steak with a cilantro garlic sauce topped with pico de gallo and grilled green onion. If you visit for brunch make sure to order the breakfast enchiladas made with eggs, spinach, ham, and queso Oaxaca. The brunch menu also offers mimosas and micheladas.

VIVO will always be one of my favorite Tex-Mex spots, and I can’t wait to go back and try something besides my go-to puffy tacos.
