Awesome Sandwiches at Butcher Board

If you’re a McKinney resident, chances are you already know about the seriously delicious, chef-created sandwiches at Butcher Board in the Historic Downtown. If not, it’s worthy of a visit even if you live in Dallas.

I love discovering places like this: a casual but stylish and inviting interior, a pleasant patio, beer and wine, and darn good food. Sometimes, you just don’t want to deal with the hustle and bustle of crowds, reservations, and getting dolled up. But you also don’t want to sacrifice the quality of your meal. You won’t have to here.

Beer, check. Wine, check. Sandwiches, check. Creamy potato salad, check.

Butcher Board focuses mostly on large, hot roasts that are hand-carved to order. With a chef’s expertise, the ingredients in each sandwich complement these mouthwatering meats. Both inventive combinations and well-executed classics are included on the menu. The pork pastrami is topped with apple and fennel slaw, pickled fresno peppers, and basil mayo. On the other hand, you’ll find a trusty standard like the meatball loaf, simply served with mozzarella and tomato sauce.

We landed somewhere in between those two with our selections, both of which we highly recommend.

Chile rubbed turkey breast

The chili-rubbed turkey breast was more than pleasing to the palate, starting with the juicy turkey. Topped with roasted tomatoes, pepper-jack cheese, peppery greens and garlic chile mayo, each flavor served its purpose well.

Smoked roast beef

The smoked roast beef was outstanding and messy in the best way possible. Again, starting with quality, flavorful meat is the focus. Add caramelized onion au jus, horseradish cream, and peppery greens, and you’ve got a masterpiece.

Admittedly, I like wine with my meal. And I have to thank Butcher Board for introducing me to delicious canned wine. It was surprisingly good and felt appropriate for the casual and rustic atmosphere. There are also beer selections, fountain drinks, bottled soda, tea, and coffee.

Sides and desserts are not forgotten here. Choose from creamy cole slaw, creamy potato salad, fresh pasta salad, or chips. Though seemingly basic, one look at the ingredients will tell you these are also chef-created. Desserts include cookies and s’mores brownies - a sweet way to top it all off.

Butcher Board is an excellent choice for lunch, especially on a sunny day when you can enjoy the patio. But it’s also a great spot to grab dinner and would even be a good low-key date night. Just make it on the earlier side - they close at 8pm. Butcher Board is open each day at 11am, with Sunday hours closing at 3pm.
