Southern-style restaurants are a staple in Texas, and it isn’t often that one in particular stands out from the crowd. Ida Claire, however, takes the concept of serving delectable Southern favorites and transforms it into something completely unique.

From the moment you first walk through the door, it’s easy to tell that Ida Claire is anything but typical. Eclectic antiquities adorn the walls, while high ceilings and tastefully rustic décor add an elegant, Southern charm to the dining room. An impressive bar encourages social sipping, and a spacious patio featuring an upgraded Airstream trailer beckons diners to kick back and stay a while.

Ida Claire's outdoor patio space includes a fully air-conditioned Airstream trailer and a projector for playing classic Southern films.

Once you’re seated, you’ll be delighted to discover that even the menus at Ida Claire are incredibly unique. Styled after vintage bound books, their pages contain everything from old Southern standards to creative, more modern dishes, all with the goal of guiding you through a culinary adventure. Begin your meal with a cocktail; their drink menu features an impressively lengthy selection of concoctions that are all likely to satisfy.

The drink menu at Ida Claire features a lengthy variety of creative cocktails worth sampling.

For something traditional, peruse their selection of classic juleps, which features standouts like the Family Reunion. It’s a creative blend of white whiskey with fresh watermelon, aperol, mint, and house lime bitters that makes for a refreshingly tart cocktail ideal for slow sipping. For something sweeter, order the Peachy Keane, one of their more popular cocktails featuring bourbon, sweet peach liqueur, honey, lemon, and egg white. Both are delicious and inventive, yet still clearly influenced by Southern tradition.

The Family Reunion and Peachy Keane, respectively, are deliciously unique elixirs inspired by Southern tradition.

When it comes to food, the menu at Ida Claire is packed full of dishes inspired by classic Southern fare but influenced by global flavors and techniques. It’s truly difficult to go wrong with any dish on the menu, which makes choosing one plate from their lengthy “book” of options quite the task. However, a few dishes in particular stand out from the others, and easily reveal why this new gem of a restaurant is gaining such a quick cult following.

For starters, order the Sweet Potato Chip Duck Confit. As the name suggests, this dish features tender duck served atop a bed of house-made sweet potato chips, and further garnished with goat cheese fondue, creamy duck fat gravy, and a sunny side up duck egg. The ingredients combine to yield a perfect blend of sweet and savory flavors, and the dish is large enough to be versatile; enjoy it as a tasty appetizer for sharing, or as an unconventional entrée.

Ida Claire's Sweet Potato Chip Duck Confit delivers a variety of flavors and textures that work well together.

As far as main courses are concerned, almost every item on Ida Claire’s list of Supper Plates is worth ordering. However, their updated version of Shrimp and Grits takes the cake when it comes to enjoying the flavors of the South. Diners are treated to succulent, seasoned Texas Prawns stacked upon a bed of deliciously rich parmesan grits and topped with a flavorful piquant sauce that ties the whole dish together with a spicy kick. The resulting flavor combinations are savory and nuanced in a way that will leave you hoping for seconds.

Shrimp and Grits, a Southern staple dish, gets a deliciously savory update at Ida Claire.

Although it’s unlikely you’ll have room for dessert after enjoying any of the filling dishes on the menu at Ida Claire, don’t be afraid to listen to temptation in the form of their Vice Cake. A slice may not be good for your diet, but with an assortment of sinful components like rich chocolate stout cake topped with coffee butter cream icing, tobacco syrup, and candied bacon, it’s hard to resist ordering a slice of this sweet siren’s song. If you’re simply too full after dinner, just plan a visit during their weekly Vinyl Hour and order a slice to enjoy with a drink and some classic tunes.

Ida Claire has quickly gained popularity, and for good reason; the food and drinks are delicious, and an assortment of weekly activities and specials – like their Vinyl Hour and Ladies’ Night – make it a perfect spot for casual socializing. If you’re visiting on a weekend, we definitely recommend calling ahead for a reservation, especially if you want a shot at a seat inside of their air-conditioned Airstream. If you play your cards right, you’ll end up with a dining experience unlike anything you’ve had before, and definitely worth enjoying again.
