Dallas is known for harboring some truly incredible restaurants, and one of its most recent additions—Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen—is certainly on the list. It’s a restaurant known for consistently serving flavorful, satisfying dishes, and with two area locations in Lakewood and McKinney, it’s already gaining a devoted following of local fans.

Sugarbacon’s general concept is simple: the menu is focused on fresh, flavorful dishes that pay homage to American-style favorites. However, the chefs at Sugarbacon are skilled at elevating classic dishes in a way that defines the restaurant’s unique style. One example can be found in the restaurant’s namesake appetizer: Sugarbacon. The idea of barbecue-glazed pork belly may seem simple, but the chefs at Sugarbacon have turned this classic Southern favorite into an elegant and delicious appetizer. The pork belly is smoked to tender perfection, and glazed with a house recipe barbecue sauce that features notes of sweet and smoky ancho chile. The final addition of slightly spicy pickles makes the Sugarbacon a balanced bite that you’ll want to order over and over again.

Sugarbacon is a namesake appetizer dish that sets the tone for the delicious meal to follow.

However, Sugarbacon specializes in more than just its namesake dish. Even the cocktails are delicious; the drink menu is full of tempting options that make it possible to find the perfect pairing every time. The Honey Basil Collins, for example, is a refreshing cocktail that blends gin with lemon, soda, and herbaceous basil honey to create a drink that transforms a classic Collins into something truly outstanding.

The Honey Basil Collins at Sugarbacon is a balanced, refreshing cocktail that pairs well with almost any dish.

When it comes to ordering the main course, it’s impossible to choose incorrectly at Sugarbacon. However, the Wagyu BBQ Brisket-Cheddar Enchiladas are a solid choice that will satisfy every time. Let us be clear: these aren’t your average, run-of-the-mill enchiladas. With this dish, the chefs at Sugarbacon take a Tex-Mex classic to new heights, thanks to an inventive combination of tender Wagyu beef seasoned with a chile-rich mole sauce that even mole skeptics will love. The addition of creamy sharp cheddar completes the dish, and a generous helping of cilantro-lime rice and black beans makes this a perfect option for sharing, especially if you’re saving room for dessert.

The Wagyu Brisket Enchiladas at Sugarbacon blow all other enchiladas out of the water.

At most restaurants, it’s tempting to skip the sides, especially when the entrée portions are sizable. However, we have to recommend that no matter what you order as your main course at Sugarbacon, you also try the Collard Greens. Don’t be fooled by their deceptive simplicity: Sugarbacon’s incredible version of this classic Southern side features the addition of a smoky duck confit that takes the whole plate to the next level. Every bite packs a tangy, flavorful punch, making this a sharable side you definitely don’t want to miss.

Sugarbacon's Duck Collard Greens may be the best you'll find anywhere in Dallas.

No surprise here: the desserts at Sugarbacon are also top-notch. With such a deliciously tempting collection of appetizers, entrees, and sides, it’s not surprising to find that you’re already full by the time dessert rolls around. However, if you can save the room, definitely take time to enjoy the Butterscotch Banana Pudding. In true Sugarbacon fashion, the chefs take a simple, classic dessert and refine it through the addition of elegant ingredients, like caramelized bananas and whipped mascarpone cheese. The final result is to-die-for, and trust us when we say you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t save room for at least a bite.

The Butterscotch Banana Pudding is just as good as every other dish on the menu at Sugarbacon, and it's the perfect way to end your meal on a high note.

Sugarbacon just opened its second location in Lakewood, and both locations are ideal places to visit for a delectable lunch or dinner. Equally delicious brunch offerings are currently available at the McKinney location, and will soon be on the menu at the Lakewood location as well. For best results, gather a few of your favorite people, and enjoy a memorable social meal you won’t forget.
