East Dallas has a hot new eatery that is getting back to the basics of great sandwiches. The team at Goodfriend Package uses high quality, local ingredients to take this seemingly simple comfort food to another level.

When you walk into Goodfriend Package, you can’t help but feel relaxed in the simple, unassuming atmosphere. A large deli counter fills one side of the space opposite a wall-long refrigerator filled with beer and non-alcoholic drink options. In between, there are tall common tables and Cultivar Coffee’s new bar is by the front door. Cultivar moved from their previous location across Peavey Road and are serving up their delicious locally roasted coffee. It’s a perfect pairing with Goodfriend Package's breakfast menu. Breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with options like pancakes, a farm egg biscuit sandwich, or “the healthy farmer” which is egg whites, avocado, and tomato on wheat toast.

After 11:00 a.m., it’s all sandwiches, all the time. When you’re making something as straightforward as a sandwich, each component is important. Goodfriend Package sources their bread from Dallas’ own Empire Baking Company and it is a great start to their sandwiches. Their meat is house-cured and because The Blind Butcher and Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House are sister restaurants, you can trust that it will be delicious.

We tried the Turkey Sandwich, which is piled high with perfectly smoked turkey with Sriracha white cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red onion in a soft ciabatta roll. The Sriracha cheddar adds some kick and puts a new twist on this traditional choice.

The Mushroom Pastrami is packed with flavor and is a Goodfriend Package original.

If you want a vegetarian meal, try the Mushroom Pastrami. It has all the components of a classic pastrami sandwich except the meat. Two slices of marble rye bread are filled with soft “portobello mushroom pastrami”, swiss cheese, house made tangy sauerkraut and “Million Island" dressing. The savory mushrooms and dressing meld with the tangy cheese and sauerkraut to make what may be the most decadent vegetarian sandwich ever. At least in Dallas!

A kale salad is one of the side options along with other salads and chips.

Goodfriend Package offers several sides like pesto pasta salad, tomato soup, and a great kale and quinoa salad. The salad has a lemony dressing and offers a refreshing crunch. All of the sides come in to-go packaging so you can eat them at home as easily as the restaurant.

You can also build your own six pack of beer. Goodfriend Package has beer from around the country with lots of micro-breweries represented. However, you can’t drink the beer in house, which helps explain the name. Whether you eat in, or take your food and drink to go, Goodfriend Package is not to be missed!
