Hunky's Hamburgers is a Blast from the Past

Although Dallas is a city known for its food, the restaurant scene hasn’t always been as fast-paced as it is now. Luckily, Hunky’s Hamburgers is a local gem that still provides Dallasites with the chance to enjoy a classic diner experience complete with unbeatable burgers, fries, and shakes.

Hunky’s has been a popular staple for a while, thanks to its tasty food and two convenient locations in bustling neighborhoods. And while the Hunky’s in Oak Lawn is wonderful in its own way, the Bishop Arts location is especially unique thanks to its vintage diner styling, including detailed features like old-school barstools and a full-service soda counter.

Hunky's vintage diner decor will make you feel like you've stepped back in time.

At Hunky’s, everything is done the old-fashioned way, including the cooking. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and other classic diner foods are made to-order, while all of your favorite fried sides are battered and cooked to golden perfection. If you’ve never visited before, you certainly can’t go wrong with ordering a classic cheeseburger, especially if you order it with a heaping side of onion rings. At Hunky’s, they’re hand-sliced and deep-fried to a golden crisp, and you definitely won’t regret ordering a serving.

When in doubt, go with a classic and order a cheeseburger and onion rings.

Another delicious choice is the Texas Cheeseburger, which features two quarter-pound patties topped with all the fixings and sandwiched between thick slices of buttered Texas toast. It’s big, and definitely filling on its own, but we suggest that you order a side of tater tots to go with it for a heavenly meal worth cheating on your diet for.

The Texas Cheeseburger is large, like its namesake, and definitely worth a try if you're hungry.

Although it may be tempting to fill up on burgers and snacks, don’t skip dessert at Hunky’s. Their full-service soda fountain whips up traditional, hand-mixed milkshakes that are to die for; believe us when we say their chocolate milkshake puts most others to shame. If you prefer eating your ice cream with a spoon instead, order a classic sundae or banana split and share with a friend. Or just select a slice of freshly baked cake or pie from the variety featured on their dessert counter and dig in.

A simple chocolate milkshake may seem commonplace, but Hunky's hand-mixed milkshakes are simply divine.

Because Bishop Arts is so popular, parking at Hunky’s can be hard to find, especially if you’re visiting during busy hours, such as lunchtime on the weekend. However, the nearby neighborhoods typically have a few open spots, and it’s worth walking a couple of blocks for the fun, vintage atmosphere alone. Go with friends and enjoy a stroll in Bishop Arts after, or take a special someone and turn date night into a blast from the past. Regardless, it’s a perfect place for quick, casual dining unlike anything else you’ll find in the city.
