Meso Maya Brings Authentic Mexican Flavors to Dallas

Meso Maya provides a great alternative to the all-too-prevalent generic Tex-Mex food in Dallas. It is an homage to Mexican food with a Mayan flair where dishes are fresh and innovative using premium ingredients native to interior Mexican cuisine. The atmosphere at dinner is lively and fun without being too trendy. The room is open and includes a large bar, and it is furnished with traditional Mexican decorations that feel authentic rather than cheesy. While dining indoors is enjoyable, the premier dining spot is the large patio. On a nice day, Meso Maya would be ideal for an afternoon Margarita with friends.

We started with a bowl of Guacamole that was served simply with cilantro and chopped tomatoes and a big basket of crispy tortilla chips. The guacamole was the right consistency, not too chunky or too smooth, with just a hint of seasoning that allowed the avocado to really shine. It was fresh and addicting when combined with the salty tortilla chips that are strategically cut into strips to make the perfect dipping vehicle.

The drink menu is excellent with the obvious favorites under the Margaritas section. The Margarita de la Casa was good, but our favorite was the Cucumber Margarita. Refreshingly light with a distinct tang of lime, it was dangerously delicious.

The food came in a timely fashion, and the table favorite was the Herradura Salmon. Served on top of a chile-guero chayote puree with crispy brussels sprouts on the side, the salmon was cooked to perfection and bathed in a sweet tamarind sauce. The brussels sprouts were the true surprise though. Crispy and charred on the outside, a salty punch hits your taste buds first, followed by a spicy bite that lingers. They are truly delicious.

Brisket Tacos served with black beans and rice

The Brisket Tacos and Chicken Tacos are also well done. The meat was tender, tortillas soft, and the slaw crispy and tangy. But a true crowd favorite is the Kobe Beef dish. The flat iron steak melts in your mouth and comes with a uniquely delicious tamale. Meso Maya also specializes in its yucatan-style braised pork, or cochinita pibil, that is served with an authentic achiote sauce.

Meso Maya is a great restaurant for a crowd or a dinner for two. Brunch is a popular time at this joint, especially when the weather is nice and patrons can enjoy traditional chilaquiles on the patio. The menu provides plenty of variety that includes several healthier options, and diners can feel the chef’s passion in the dishes that are served. Meso Maya (two locations) is owned by Firebird Restaurant Group, which is the company behind El Fenix and La Ventanta; they clearly know what they are doing. The atmosphere, the patio, the drinks and the bold flavors of the food will keep you coming back for more.
