Mi Cocina - A Dallas Favorite at the Forefront of Gluten-Free Dining

Mi Cocina has been a Dallas favorite for years. It’s no secret that they offer crazy-good Tex-Mex and legendary margaritas. Haven’t sampled the famous Mambo Taxi? You don’t know what you’re missing! (Warning – they’re stronger than they taste.)

But did you know that Mi Cocina is at the forefront of gluten-free dining, offering a specific gluten-free menu? Not only are separate gluten-free menus hard to come by, but they usually skimp on offerings and flavor. Not so at Mi Cocina.

All Mi Cocina locations offer a gluten-free menu; however, we visited the Highland Park Village location, as it offers exceptional people-watching in addition to beautiful scenery in and out of the restaurant. If you are looking for a fun atmosphere and an upbeat, busy scene, it totally delivers. Be prepared to wait, but know that the crowd is generally friendly and banter flows freely among patrons sitting on the window-lined waiting benches. The upstairs bar and seating area offers privacy amid a hopping dining room, in case you have an intimate party you’d like to accommodate.

All locations offer equally delicious cuisine, so no worries if you aren’t in the vicinity of the Park Cities… you’ll be able to enjoy a comparably great experience, with a modern atmosphere to boot. Most other locations have an equally hopping dining room as well.

To start, most folks opt to indulge in the queso. There are several varieties to choose from and ways to upgrade it based on your likes and dislikes (brisket, guac, etc.). Other popular choices include the guacamole and ceviche. For gluten-free diners, be sure to ask for gluten-free corn tortillas and order the queso blanco. (Beware, chips are not gluten-free.)

The main course can go many different ways, but crowd-pleasers include the “tacos de brisket”, rico salad, and fajitas – either standard or sunset (Latin stir-fry) style – all of which come with a yummy gluten-free version. Elsewhere, I’ve been disappointed with the gluten-free fajitas because the normal versions are marinated with soy sauce (not gluten-free), but Mi Cocina’s version leaves nothing lacking in the taste department.

Gluten-Free Fajitas

Should weekend brunch be your fancy, the breakfast quesadillas are a popular choice (not gluten-free), as are the brunch tacos and Huevos a la “M” – which can be made gluten-free upon request. The portion size is perfect for one!

So next time you’re thinking about meeting up for a marg with friends or just craving some Tex-Mex, go with a Dallas favorite and plan on Mi Cocina! Feel great about bringing your gluten-free friends, too – as they’ll have a wide variety of options to choose from.
