It’s no secret that Texans love Mexican food. But Quesa, Oak Lawn’s newest addition, isn’t your typical Texas Mexican restaurant. Instead of serving up the same old Tex-Mex staples we’re all used to, the chefs at Quesa put a traditional spin on Mexican food by offering dishes inspired by the authentic street cuisine of Mexico, and the results are delicious.

Bringing traditional Mexican food to Texas may not seem like a revolutionary concept, but Quesa does it well. The restaurant itself is stylish and modern, with a pleasant outdoor patio and walls of windows that swing open to welcome a breeze on nice days. The interior is open and inviting, and guests can actually see their food being prepared thanks to the open kitchen housed behind a wall of glass. Their menu is varied, with plenty of options to choose from, and thanks to their full bar, there’s always a drink to perfectly complement your meal.

The drink menu at Quesa features a variety of fruit-infused margaritas, like the Fresa (Strawberry) Margarita.

When you visit Quesa, plan to enjoy an authentic Mexican meal, and start it off right with one of their many tequila-based cocktails. They serve a variety of delicious margaritas, both on the rocks and frozen; we recommend you try one of their fruit-infused varieties, such as the Fresa (Strawberry) or Mango Margarita. Or, if you’re a real tequila aficionado, make a selection from their lengthy list of choices, or order the Bandera Trio and enjoy three shots for a little variety. Their mojitos are delicious and refreshing, and with six fresh fruit flavors to choose from, it’s hard to go wrong. If you have to choose just one, try the Berry Mojito; it’s light and sweet, with just the perfect hint of tartness.

The Berry Mojito is a refreshingly sweet cocktail made with freshly-muddled berries and mint.

The food at Quesa is served street-style, so dishes are small and best ordered in bunches. Tacos are the best place to start, and you can order them singly, in a trio, or in a group of five if you’re really hungry. The Prime Rib Taco, which is served with “Magic Onions” and Cilantro, is delectable – no matter how many you’re ordering, be sure to include it. The Pastor Taco, which features seasoned pork and chopped pineapple, is another great choice, thanks to its perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. For a perfect trio, add the Picadillo Taco, made with finely-chopped ground beef sautéed with vegetables and spices.

Tacos at Quesa can be ordered in single quantities, or in groups of three or five for added variety.

If you’re in the mood for something different, try Quesa’s signature dish: the Quesa. Their namesake dish is a traditional Mexican version of savory quesadillas, and features delicious meats cooked and then deep-fried to golden perfection inside a flaky, crispy shell. They serve a variety of options, all featuring different meats, but we recommend you try the Barbacoa or Picadillo versions for something truly delicious. All dishes at Quesa are served with a complimentary set of salsas, onions, cilantro, and limes, so you can dress your meal up however you prefer. Their menu also features both breakfast and late-night options, so you can get your Mexican food fix whenever cravings come calling.

The Barbacoa Quesa is fried to golden perfection and served alongside house-recipe salsa.

Quesa's namesake dish is a flaky, fried variation on a savory quesadilla.

If you manage to save room for dessert, consider a slice of their Tres Leches Cake, which they’ve dubbed the “Best Tres Leches Ever.” Or, if you’re looking for a healthier option, order one of their Aguas Frescas for a refreshingly sweet finish to your meal. Parking can be tricky during busy hours, so plan your visit accordingly, or just find a spot nearby and enjoy a stroll down the vibrant Cedar Springs strip on your way – the walk is worth it for a margarita.
