Few restaurants possess the culinary clout of Gemma, one of the most beloved restaurants in Dallas. The humble Henderson Avenue hotspot offers a delightfully tailored menu filled with rotating seasonal selections, and its unique late-night schedule sets it apart from other local establishments. But the true secret behind Gemma’s success is the exquisite food that emerges from its kitchen.

Gemma is known for its rotating menu, which changes with the seasons to feature new, fresh ingredients. Each menu showcases stellar cuisine unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere, and most dishes are accompanied by recommended wine pairings to complete each meal. Although Gemma’s lengthy wine list is always sure to satisfy, the menu also features an equally tempting collection of handcrafted cocktails. The Jade Goddess, for example, is a delicious cocktail that blends Oolong-infused vodka with lemon to create a slightly acidic, refreshing complement to your meal.

The Jade Goddess is a deliciously refreshing cocktail that's perfect for sipping with an entree or as an aperitif alongside Gemma's complimentary Smoked Gouda and Fig Scones.

To make the most of your time at Gemma, order a series of dishes and experience a full progression of seasonal flavors. Every appetizer in Gemma’s repertoire is enticing, but the Thai-inspired Mussels are a definite standout. They’re served family-style in a coconut and lemongrass broth that’s delicious enough to stand on its own as a soup, but it’s even better when combined with the savory flavor of fresh mussels. Start your meal off on a high note by ordering a bowl to share before the main course.

Few appetizers satisfy the way Gemma's flavorful Thai-inspired Mussels do.

The main courses at Gemma are just as incredible as the other dishes on the menu, and can be paired with wines from Gemma’s curated list for the ultimate dining experience. Although the offerings may change depending on when you visit, the Grilled Striped Bass is definitely worth trying when it’s available. It features a perfectly grilled filet of bass atop a bed of hearty quinoa risotto that’s sweetened by the addition of brown butter and butternut squash. The resulting flavor combination is balanced, elegant, and entirely delectable.

Gemma is known for serving fantastic seafood, and the Grilled Striped Bass is no exception.

If you’re dining with a group, be sure to also try some of the side dishes available at Gemma. The Okra Makhani is a great example of the kind of inventive fare you’ll always find on the menu, no matter the season. It features a classic vegetable staple seasoned with a flavorful sauce inspired by the flavors of India, and it’s the perfect dish to enjoy alongside an entrée.

Okra may seem like a simple side, but the Okra Makhani at Gemma spices up the classic vegetable with bright, zesty flavors.

Finally, be sure to save room for dessert. The dessert menu at Gemma varies from featuring seasonal pastries and delicacies to showcasing artisanal cheeses, but certain items are always worth ordering when available. The Pistachio Semifreddo is one such dish, thanks to its perfectly creamy consistency and beautiful presentation. The combination of salty pistachio with sweet semi-frozen cream is delightful on its own, but the addition of a crispy chocolate anise tuile creates the perfect textural balance to complete the dish. Simply put, there’s no better way to end a delicious meal than with an equally delicious dessert.

The Pistachio Semifreddo at Gemma isn't just beautiful to look at, it's also wonderful to eat.

Gemma is open from 5:00 pm until 1:00 am Tuesday through Sunday. Although dinner service is the main attraction, be sure to drop in for the unique “Reverse Happy Hour” that takes place between 10:30 pm and 1:00 am every night; it’s the perfect way to snag a deal while enjoying a spectacular meal. If you’re visiting during regular dinner hours, be sure to call ahead and make a reservation so you can skip the wait and get right to the main attraction: the food.
