In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday in an effort to help drive more customers through the doors of small businesses across the country. Small Business Saturday takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, otherwise known as the day after Black Friday. While there's nothing wrong with Black Friday, we obviously prefer the local mentality of shopping small.

This year, we're highlighting one of the best toy stores in Dallas: The Toy Maven. They also have a location in Southlake if that's more convenient for you. We love this shop for so many reasons, but we'll hit some of the high notes and then let you check out some of the fun picks we've rounded up below.

1. The quality of their inventory is unmatched.

If you're a parent, you know there are gazillions of toys, but they're not all created equal. You know the feeling when you've found a GREAT toy; it's quality material, it's adorable, and it's obvious how it will make an important impact on your child's development and happiness. You can just picture the smiles and positivity that will come from this great find. Here, you will find these types of products for both genders at a variety of ages, for both indoor and outdoor play.

2. They reward you for shopping local.

Each time you shop, they'll mark down your total. After your 15th visit, they'll add up the average amount spent, and you'll get that much credit to spend.

If you join their email list, you'll also get a 20% coupon once per month.

3. They're a Lego gold standard store.

This means they get first releases and those hard-to-find, highly anticipated sets. The owner says she makes it a point to remain price-competitive with Target.

4. They offer complimentary gift wrap.

This saves customers time and money, and their wrapping is actually cute!

Now, get inspired before you head that way.

If you have several kids to buy for, you shouldn't have a problem getting each of them a unique stocking stuffer.

Stocking stuffers galore!

Classic offerings like books and marbles bring some nostalgia to visiting a local toy shop.

These lollipop erasers and ice cream cone pens would make adorable gifts for your little girl's friends.

Find a wide selection of baby dolls for different ages, plus accessories to go along with them.

Dress up time!

Slumber parties are more fun with cute sleeping bags!

Green Toys - these boats and trucks look like lots of fun, and they're made from 100% recycled materials. Win-win!

Gone Fishin'

A glimpse of the huge Lego collection

Board games for all ages

How fun are these? Turn a rainy day into a blast while keeping the kiddos active.

The selection of outdoor toys here is fantastic. From zip lines and balls to unique games and pedal toys, even adults might feel the urge to play outside.

The unicorn pogo jumper is challenging (yes, I've tried it) but fun.

The personable owner of the store recommended this cool BERG bike for a big ticket item. The quality is top notch, and she loves that kids still pedal themselves. Mr. Teddy Bear is pretty cute, too!

From infant toys to board games that even parents can play, you should be able to do some damage to your shopping list here. But the best part about it is that you'll be supporting a local business that cares about the community they live in. The friendly customer service is noticeable, the prices are competitive, and you'll be rewarded. That sounds like a great way to shop for Christmas this year. Happy Small Business Saturday to all of the small businesses out there!
