Small Brewpub Delivers Big Flavor

From the outside, Small Brewpub is nothing fancy. It is located on a strip in Oak Cliff where Laundromats are mingled with clothing stores. The outside is simple with a few metal tables and chairs and a small logo on the door. But once you step inside those glass doors, you will find yourself in a familiar neighborhood spot with concrete floors, beautiful wood tables, and an incredible bar. The place is simple with an unfinished feeling to it, but that is simply part of its charm.

The rustic bar is the focal point of the open restaurant.

Large fermentation tanks line the wall and house the latest brews.

First, walk up to the long bar with slats of wood arching over your head and start a tab. Then find your seat at one of the communal tables in the big open room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Oak Cliff strip. The friendly bartenders will serve as your waiters throughout the night and are more than willing to explain their beers and the menu in great detail.

Small Brewpub is clearly a brewery, obvious by not only its name, but also the three large fermentation tanks hovering near the bar. They currently offer four of their own brews at a time. While four seems like a small number, they are testing different ones constantly and may increase that number in the future.

Try a flight of beer so that you can taste all four of Small Brewpub's own creations.

The four latest concoctions are listed on the chalkboard wall behind the bar.

While this joint is definitely a brewery first, the food is really incredible and not at all what you would expect from a place focused on making its own beer. The former sous chef of FT33, Misti Norris, manages the kitchen, and once you take a look at the elegant, refined dishes heading to each table, you can tell.

The menu is small, but it is well-thought out. There are a selection of snacks, small plates, and entrees, each dish creative, seriously flavorful, and beautifully presented. It's hard to elevate bar food to a level where people talk about it, but Norris has succeeded in just that. As one of Bon Appetit's 50 finalists for Best New Restaurant, this brewery is definitely doing something right.

The Charcuterie Board is an adventourus array of meats, pickled vegetables, and mustard seed crackers.

The Boudin Balls are deep fried sausage and rice balls that are spicy but complemented perfectly with a sweet and cooling apple sauce and thinly sliced apple chips.

The chicken entree is not your average chicken dish. The plate presents you with chicken three ways: chicken sausage, crispy chicken skin, and chicken ham.

Small Brewpub is a comfortable hangout spot that also happens to serve incredible food. The clientele was a nice mix of people, which added to its friendly, hospitable environment. Since it's open from 4pm-midnight every day, Small Brewpub on Jefferson should become your go-to spot for a great beer and a delicious dinner any day of the week.
