Downtown Plano offers a quaint and cozy location for several great restaurants, including Urban Rio Cantina & Grill. Urban Rio doubles as a delicious restaurant and a lively bar for late night drinks. This location used to be the Plano Ice House built in 1917 and has been transformed into a two story cantina and grill. If you’re looking for a more relaxed dining experience, we recommend sitting downstairs in the dining room in one of their cozy booths. For drinks with friends, live music, and scenic views, head upstairs to the On the Rocks Cantina

A Mexican restaurant that serves black bean dip as well as salsa has already won us over. Starting off your meal with their complimentary chips, salsa and black bean dip is the way to go! Other great starters include the Queso Blanco, Guacamole, and Nacho Libre Nachos.

Stuffed Avocados

Urban Rio’s menu is far from limited, making entrée decisions quite difficult. We ultimately had to try the Stuffed Avocados that our waitress raved about. She did not steer us wrong; this meal was too good to be true! It included two avocado halves stuffed with chicken tinga, topped with an onion cloud, queso blanco and pico de gallo. Other specialties to try are Shea’s Tamale Pie, Rio’s Carne Asada, and the Chile Relleno-Picadillo Beef.

House-Smoked Brisket Tacos

For tacos, we chose the House-Smoked Brisket Tacos: three corn tortillas stuffed with brisket, diced pickle, and jalapeno slaw. If you want to try a little of everything, we suggest going for the mix and match route and trying three different tacos, such as the Fried Fish, Chicken Tinga, and Al Pastor selections. Other outstanding options included the Chimichurri Chicken Tortas and the Roasted Corn and Crab Enchiladas.

Happy Hour Frozen Mojito

On the Rocks Cantina doesn’t just offer your typical happy hour; they have a different drink special every day of the week, served all day! We happened to dine the day of $4 frozen drinks, and we have to say, our Frozen Mojito was delicious. They also offer many other drinks such as a classic Michelada and the Basil Watermelon cocktail.

Next time you’re visiting historic Downtown Plano, make sure to stop by Urban Rio. Whether for lunch, dinner, happy hour or weekend brunch, we think you’ll love both the lively atmosphere and the delicious cocktails and bites.
