After leaving Liberty Kitchen as executive chef, Travis Lenig and his business partner Christopher Ramirez leased the old Zelko Bistro bungalow in the Heights and have opened their first venture, Field & Tides Restaurant and Bar. The two also acquired the old gas station next door, which should be opening in early summer for cocktails and light-bites and will be the perfect waiting area for Field & Tides as they currently do not accept reservations for parties under six.

Dining Room

The charming Craftsman has been revamped and updated with rustic charm. The long antler chandelier over the main dining area and the exposed wooden bar makes the space feel warm and inviting.

Outdoor Patio

They have expanded the patio and offer full service outside as well. The bar inside serves up some inventive takes on old favorites designed by the beverage director, Monique Hernandez.

Angry Gunsel & Plunge Point Cocktails

The Angry Gunsel is a spicy take on a margarita with house jalapeño infused tequila cut with agave and combier orange. The Plunge Point cocktail offers house-infused pineapple vodka served with blood orange juice and topped with bubbles. They have several beers on tap along with a pretty extensive beer and IPA list as well as a nice wine list.

The food is as the name states, surf and turf, with inventive Southern takes on old favorites. The appetizers range from raw oysters, to pimento cheese fritters, to the house favorite chicken ‘wangs.’

F&T Chicken 'Wangs'

The chicken wings are lightly fried, leaving the skin salty. The wings are then topped with a sticky sweet sambal glaze and a cilantro garlic aioli. These are not your average chicken wings and are sure to win anyone over. The house salad is bright and fresh as is the beet salad.

Tomato and Crab Stack

The standout salad is the Tomato and Crab Stack with lightly breaded cornmeal crusted green tomatoes atop a bed of arugula, all covered by giant lumps of melt-in-your mouth Gulf Coast crab. The entrees are a mix of entrée salads, sandwiches and traditional surf and turf items but with a Southern, Gulf Coast twist. The Sloppy Tides sandwich is a perfectly fried cornmeal crusted fish filet topped with coleslaw, chipotle anchovy, pickle and a fried egg between a butter challah bun which is accompanied by fries.

The Gulf Snapper, Scallops, Venison Chops, and Duck are all delicious and prove the menu has literally something for everyone. Many of the sides are Southern as well, boasting favorites like fried brussels sprouts, collard greens and fries.

Fried Brussel Sprouts

The desserts are the perfect ending to a delightful meal and should not be missed. The decadent Chocolate Alabama Stack cake is a giant slice of heaven, with bourbon chocolate icing spread between layers of chocolate sponge cake and served cold with whipping cream. The Strawberries and Cream begins with the shortbread sugar cookies topped with macerated strawberries, vanilla crème fraiche and drizzled with a bright basil syrup.

Field & Tides even offers a children’s menu with a variety of options, proving they are family friendly but also a fun date spot with great food and drinks. Their great location and a menu with this much depth will certainly become a Heights and Houston favorite.
