The Hay Merchant cultivates a historical perspective of Houston and infuses the gastropub trend that totes craft beers and menus that are fit for foodies. The industrial, antique atmosphere inspires a laid back grab-a-beer kind of afternoon or evening with dark woods, big tables and classic video games that fill the open area bar.

The hip, eclectic joint, adjacent to the renowned Underbelly, offers it’s full menu every evening and a specialty brunch menu on Saturday and Sundays. Brunch on the patio makes time stand still and induces a feeling of relaxation and enjoyment as good company, craft beers and a mouthwatering meal are ordered from a menu that puts a gourmet twist on typical bar fare with fresh ingredients and inventive additions.

Seasonal Salad of baby bibb, shrimp, avocado, roasted cauliflower, local radishes, tomato, cojita cheese and red wine vinaigrette.

Time passes slowly as cars mosey down the Montrose section of Westheimer Road and the sun shines on the patio.  A dish like the Seasonal Salad made of baby bibb, avocado, roasted cauliflower, local radish, tomato, cojita cheese and red wine vinaigrette may sound simple but inspires a burst of flavors with the caramelization of the cauliflower balanced by the crisp crunch of the refreshing radish and bibb. The salad comes together through the savory texture of the avocado and cojita cheese and takes on a satisfying equilibrium with the not so typical, almost thick red-wine vinaigrette.

Cease and Desist Burger, double meat, double cheese burger. photo credit: julie soefer

The infamous Cease and Desist Burger gives the fill you up feeling that is meant to be felt when bar food is in order. The burger, created by recent James Beard award winner Chris Shepherd, is composed of a double patty cheeseburger and served with salty fries that leaves you begging for more.  Fresh cut and fried to perfection, they have the perfect porosity to sop up a little fried egg yolk, should you choose to add it to your burger. The only thing that will not happen when you choose to stop by Hay Merchant is probably "cease and desist" eating and drinking.
