Step inside, and you’re in a shabby chic wonderland that looks straight out of Pinterest, complete with rustic wood decor, adorable chalkboard writing, Christmas lights, and cute knickknacks.

Bird Bakery Interior

Bird Bakery has been an Alamo Heights staple for over two years, and it prides itself on serving baked-from-scratch treats with the best ingredients and as fresh as possible. They don’t believe in serving day-old delicacies; everything you eat was baked several hours ago. But don’t worry—they don’t toss out perfectly good dessert just because it was baked 24 hours ago. They donate all leftovers to the San Antonio Food Bank.

Bird Bakery's Brownies and Cookies

When you step up to the counter, it’s hard not to be enthralled by foot after foot of sweet treats in the display cases. There’s your typical assortment of brownies, cookies, and lemon bars, then an onslaught of cupcakes—big ones, small ones, seasonal ones, classic ones, quirky ones. Cupcakes are one of Bird’s specialities, and their signature touch is filling the cupcakes with frosting to maintain a perfect buttercream-to-cupcake ratio.

Bird Bakery's Pies and Cakes

Next, you’re greeted by full-fledged desserts like miniature honey cheesecake, spiced buttermilk pie, and banana pudding. Don’t see what you’re looking for, or need a larger portion? You can custom order cupcakes, pies, cakes, and other delicacies in the size, color, and shape of your choosing.

In the mood for some savory food, too? Not to worry—their menu of savory “bird food” is surprisingly sumptuous. Specialties include sandwiches made with their homemade pimento cheese spread, egg salad, chicken salad, and tuna salad. If you're craving comfort food, try the grilled cheese sandwich or the traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich. For something a little out of the ordinary, get the Nutella on toasted brioche, or the peanut butter sandwich with local jalepeno blackberry jam on brioche.

Tarragon Chicken Salad Sandwich: Bird Bakery's own chicken salad with Havarti, arugula, tomato, mayo, and Dijon on seeded bread. The homemade bread had a wonderful, complex taste, and the creamy homemade chicken salad was one of the best I've ever had.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Brioche. You can customize it with other additions; my guest added turkey to make it a heartier meal.

Monster Cookie (flourless cookie made with oats, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and M&Ms), which was thick and full of delicious peanut butter flavor. It's next to a Mexican Hot Chocolate Brownie, one of their most popular items and a perfect treat for chocaholics.

Bird Blue Vanilla Cupcake, topped and filled with perfectly made homemade buttercream and vanilla cake that's far from boring!

If you can't make up your mind, order a smattering of Mini Cupcakes and taste them all! We tried Carrot, Southern Red Velvet, Chocolate Salted Caramel, and Chocolate Strawberry. Our favorites by far were the Red Velvet and Chocolate Salted Caramel.

Whether you want a comforting made-from-scratch sandwich or sugary sweet treats made with quality ingredients, Bird Bakery does it right!
